5 Ways to Manage Migraine Pain at Home

Search Icon

Migraine is among the most common problems of the modern age, affecting at least one person out of ten. Ayurveda describes this condition as ‘Sooryavarta’ - ‘Soorya’ meaning ‘the sun’ and ‘avarta’ meaning ‘affliction or blockage’. It is caused by excessive use of brain and blood vessels, brought on by the suppression of natural urges, indigestion, intake of polluted food, anger, jealousy, and mainly stress. Symptoms associated with migraine pain are one-sided throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light.

Ayurveda recommends a few home remedies to reduce the migraine pain and its associated symptoms.

Drink Ginger Tea:

Drinking ginger tea help relieve the symptoms associated with migraine, especially nausea. Ginger root is known to block prostiglandins - the compound that initiates muscle contraction and leads to headaches. Daily consumption of 2-4 grams of ginger is advised to feel better and reduce episodes of migraine.

Apply a paste of nutmeg or sandalwood on forehead:

Mix approximately a tablespoon of nutmeg powder with water to form a smooth paste. You can either use freshly crushed nutmeg powder or a store-bought one. Massage this paste onto your forehead for around 10 to 15 minutes. This will help relieve headaches and promote sleep.

Drink peppermint tea or massage peppermint oil to the forehead:

Peppermint has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the nerves and relieve a headache. You can either drink a peppermint infused tea or massage your forehead with peppermint oil and leave it for at least half an hour. Do this as often as you want throughout the day to find relief from the pain.

Soak coriander seeds overnight and drink its water:

Take a teaspoon of coriander seed or dhania powder and soak it in water overnight. Drink this water the next morning on an empty stomach. This will help relieve headaches and migraine-related symptoms.

A migraine is a troublesome issue and preventing it is always a better option. Living a stress-free life and maintaining a regular sleeping schedule can help you keep away from this severe situation.
