Sore throat is a fairly common problem and most of us are likely to complain of it at least two or three times a year. It can be triggered by change of weather or it could be an allergic reaction to the dust and pollution in the air.
Even if your sore throat isn’t serious enough for a doctor’s visit, it’s still painful and can prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. Here are some home remedies that you can use to soothe the pain and irritation:
The very traditional method of gargling with warm salt water can help soothe a sore throat, break down a cough and kill bacteria in the throat. Mix half-teaspoon of salt in a glass full of warm water and gargle with it. Repeat every three hours until you feel the soreness in your throat fading away.
Honey works wonders when you have a cold, cough, or sore throat. You can have a teaspoonful of honey three times a day or mix it to green tea and sip it. Warm lemon water mixed with honey is also helpful in bringing relief from sore throat.
Methi has many health benefits and is effective in its various forms. You can consume fenugreek seeds, use topical oil, or drink fenugreek tea. It can relieve pain and kill bacteria that cause inflammation. It is also an effective anti-fungal agent. For all these reasons, methi is an excellent natural remedy for sore throats.
Garlic is known for its natural antibacterial properties and it’s known to bring relief from the pain and inflammation you get when you get sore throat. Make garlic tea by adding finely chopped garlic (3-4 cloves) to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes and drink the tea. Have 2-3 cups of this tea throughout the day until you feel better.
Gargling with baking soda and salt water can help relieve a sore throat. It kills bacteria and prevents the growth of yeast and fungi. Add ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of water. Use every three hours.
Trying out these simple home remedies may help you speed-up recovery and save you a trip to the doctor. Also, drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest to feel your best.
