Yoga is not just about touching your toes or doing some limb twisting poses. Regular practise of Yoga and following Dinacharya can keep you healthy and happy. If you're thinking about starting yoga, here are some tips to get you started on your long-term relationship with yoga.
Don't think watching some videos will be enough to learn yoga. With a teacher by your side, you will be able to learn the proper postures and do the asanas without injuring yourself or pulling any muscles. If you have any medical injuries, it becomes even more important to seek help from a professional who can customise your sessions and avoid complications.
This is an obvious tip, but you'll be surprised how many people get it wrong. Yoga requires you to bend and stretch a lot and if you're wearing comfortable (and stretchable) clothes, you can do all the asanas without any worries. Also, avoid wearing watches, jewelry, danglers, or belts while doing yoga.
Even though it is recommended that you practice yoga early in the morning, any time of the day is fine, depending on your routine. What matters the most is that you be regular, and if you can only find time late evenings, that's when you should do yoga.
Practice yoga on an empty stomach or after 2-3 hours of eating a meal. Also, consume 2-3 litres of water during the day to help you flush out the toxins.
Do not forget to do gentle warm-up exercises to help loosen the body and prepare it for yoga. It is an important step and will ensure that you’re able to do the asanas more smoothly.
To improve flexibility, do only as much as you are comfortable with and then push yourself a bit more. Going slightly beyond your comfort zone is a good way to challenge yourself and keep things interesting.
It is always helpful if you practise it with someone in your family or friend circle. If you do not have the space at your home, you can also visit a nearby park or open space.
