Search Icon

Are you experiencing excruciating pain in your joints? It might be a symptom of arthritis, gout, fibromyalgia or a simple knee joint pain. Knee pain treatment may become essential if the pain has persisted for very long. The following home remedies for knee pain must be taken in combination with herbal Ayurvedic medicines after a proper consultation with the doctor.

  1. Epsom Salt Soak

Epsom salt, which is a natural source of magnesium sulphate, has been proven to relieve both muscular and joint pains. To do this remedy at home, add half a cup of Epsom salt in a large bowl and soak the affected area inside the water. If the pain is not generalised to a particular area, you can also add the salt in your bathtub and soak yourself for 5 to 10 minutes to get the benefit. If you do not have a large bowl or tub, soak a big cotton cloth in water mixed with some salt and gently press upon the affected area with a wet cloth. For maximum benefit you can also use warm water instead of cold water.

  1. Ginger-Turmeric-Ajwain Tea

The active ingredient curcumin in turmeric has been proven in research to relieve pain. Replace your regular cup of caffeine-based tea with ginger, ajwain and turmeric. To make this tea take 2 cups of water in a pan and bring it to a boil. Now add an inch of crushed ginger, a teaspoon of turmeric, and two pinches of ajwain into the water. Continue to boil until the water has reduced to 1 cup. Now strain the water into a cup, and add 1 or 2 teaspoons of honey. Take this tea twice every day, ideally in the morning during breakfast and later in the evening for maximum benefit.

  1. Pain relief bolus

Potali is the Sanskrit word for bolus—a pack bound together in a cloth. Ayurveda makes use of boluses for various reasons, one of them is to treat pains. Potali Massage is an essential part of Panchakarma pain relief treatments administered at Jivagram Centre for Wellbeing. You can easily make a bolus at home by adding equal amounts of rice, flour, or salt in a cotton cloth and packing everything together tightly. However, if you wish to purchase a premade Ayurvedic bolus, then you must try Jiva Ayurveda’s Pain Calm Potali which includes all the essential herbs in addition to the base ingredients mentioned here. To use the bolus, simply heat it over a pan and apply on the affected area for relief.

  1. Lose Weight

Obesity severely complicates matters related to joint health. Our joints carry most of the weight of our body. Therefore, if you are overweight, your joints are doing extra work, which overtime, can take a toll and start deteriorating the connecting points between the joints making them grind against each other. The first step in knee pain treatment or while treating gout is to reduce body weight, especially in obese individuals. Therefore, it goes without saying that if you have non-optimal bodyweight, start by losing some weight. To do that plan a caloric-deficit diet that will increase your metabolism and burn off excess fat. Make sure not to lose muscle mass because that will only make you weaker and lead to fatigue which is not the goal here. A good way to start is to  first find your body type (Prakriti) according to Ayurveda, and then consult an ayurvedic dietician to design an optimal diet plan that suits your body type.

  1. Add pain relief spices in your diet

Spices such as paper, turmeric and ginger enables your brain to deal with pain in a better way. Not only that, it also helps your body in healing the affected area by promoting new tissue generation through better metabolism. According to ayurveda new tissues are produced based on the food we eat which is digested and converted into Dhatus (tissues). Remember not to overdo spices because Ayurveda recommends a balance in everything. To get the dual benefit of spices (healing & pain-relief), start adding the above mentioned spices in your meals in a balanced proportion.

Like we mentioned earlier, these home remedies for knee pain and must be taken in combination knee pain treatment which includes herbal medicines prescribed by your doctor. If you have not already spoken to a doctor about your joint disorders, do not delay any further. Research shows that people who come early to Ayurveda show better results that stays longer too.
