Dietary Do?s and Don?ts for Relief from Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a bowel disease that causes long lasting inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal pain, and rectal bleeding. If ignored, Ulcerative colitis can sometimes lead to life-threatening complications as well.

Some of the causes of Ulcerative colitis may be genetics, environmental changes, and an overactive immune system. Ayurveda recommends tailored dietary habits to soothe the symptoms. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind.

Good to Eat

  • Green leafy vegetables, in moderation, calm the pitta because of their light texture.

  • Vegetables like pumpkin (kaddu), ash gourd (petha), bottle gourd (lauki), and ridge gourd (torai) ignite the agni (digestive fire) and makes digestion easier.

  • Bananas are good for balancing the vata and provide prana (energy).

  • Pomegranate juice is used to calm disorders of the stomach caused by any kind of digestive problems.

  • Spices like adrak (ginger) and haldi (turmeric) can fight nausea and joint pain, which are common symptoms of Ulcerative colitis

Bad to Eat

  • Spicy foods cause irritation in an already irritated colon. Avoid them.

  • Dairy Products can increase gastrointestinal tract mobility and cause cramping and worsened diarrhea.

  • Refined sugar, frozen food, packaged food, and white flour should be avoided. The emulsifiers used in making processed foods cause inflammation. You should avoid greasy and sugary food products, since they lead to diarrhea.

If you’re suffering from Ulcerative colitis, It is recommended to keep a track of the foods that you’re eating in a journal. If you notice reaction to any particular food, you should remove them from your diet. However, for long term relief from Ulcerative colitis, talk to a Jiva doctor today.
