Ayurveda identifies and treats the root cause of the problem, resulting in a permanent solution. In Ayurveda, treatments are suggested by each individual's body constitution. Therefore, no universal solution that can be applied to all. This reduces the chances of failure.
When it comes to weight loss, Ayurveda, advises to structure our diet on the basis of nature’s cycles, consuming seasonal produce, which incorporates six major tastes in every meal, we consume - sweet, salty, sour, bitter, pungent, astringent.
The secondary factor that largely influences the body weight is our body constitution or dosha, as our doshas determine the ratio in which the six tastes should be incorporated into foods specific to our body constitution.
There are three main doshas, each of which reflects a different combination of elements influencing our nature:
- Vata (wind and air) – People with Vata dominant dosha are very thin and flighty.
- Pitta (fire and water) – Pitta dominant individuals can be short-tempered and have oily skin.
- Kapha (earth and water) – Kapha dominant people are usually grounded and big-boned.
If you want to try a dosha-specific Ayurvedic diet, start with few minor changes like, eat foods that are in season, your largest meal of the day should be your lunch, eat a smaller breakfast and an even smaller dinner, and add Ayurvedic "superfoods" to your diet.
