Bipolar Disorder causes volatile and extreme moods. There are a number of Ayurvedic remedies that can help ease its effects.

Highlights

  • Bipolar Disorder is caused by an aggravated vata.

  • Ayurvedic Chikitsas such as increasing Ojas and Nasya can help ease its symptoms.

According to Ayurveda, Bipolar disorder is caused by a severe vata imbalance in the body. This imbalance causes patients to fluctuate between two drastic phases - mania (aggressiveness, rashness) and depression (sadness, hopelessness). These phases are extreme and have huge effects on the life of the sufferer and those around him/her. However, there are a number of Ayurvedic tips that help ease the symptoms of this disorder.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Bipolar Disorder

  • Ojas lends immunity and vitality to our body. To increase Ojas, eat foods like khajoor (dates), badam (almonds), ghee, and a selection of fresh fruits and veggies.

  • Do daily til tel Abhyanga (Ayurvedic self-massage with sesame oil) as it pacifies the vata.

  • Perform Nasya, a process that involves putting oil in the nose. You can opt for til tel (sesame oil) or badam tel (almond oil) as they lubricate the channels of the brain, making it function more smoothly,

General Advice for Bipolar Disorder

  • Avoid all recreational drugs, caffeine and cigarettes as they over-stimulate the brain.

  • Express gratitude for everything in your life. You can start the practice by thanking God for each meal placed before you.

  • Avoid all cold beverages and ice as they aggravate the vata. Sip on warm water instead.

  • Follow a daily routine of yoga and pranayama.
