Ayurveda recommends a regimen for pregnant women known as Garbhini Paricharya. In addition to preparing the mother for the delivery, this antenatal care regimen also facilitates the physical and spiritual development of the baby.
Maasaanumasika pathya: Month-wise diet routine for the mother
Garbhasthaapaka dravyaas: Food and other substances that should be had during pregnancy
Garbhopaghaathakara bhaavas: Activities or substances there are harmful for the mother and foetus.
Together, these three branches of garbhini parichaya lay down the ahaar (diet), vihaar (recreational activities), aachaar (conduct), and vichaar (thoughts and mindset) for a pregnant woman.
While the guidelines are quite extensive in nature, here are a few things that a pregnant woman should keep in mind:
Follow a sattvik diet
Read holy scriptures
Stay away from coitus
Refrain from hectic traveling
Listen to soft music
Ayurveda acharyas strongly believed that practicing garbhini parichaya dedicatedly would lead to several benefits.
It softened the back, sides of the chest, pelvis, waist, and the placenta (apara).
It regulated downward movement of vaatha (vathaanulomana), which helped in the elimination of urine and stool. Healthy apana vata (a sub dosha of vata) was also important for the expulsion of the foetus during delivery.
It imparted strength to the mother, softened her skin, and improved her complexion.
It was also believed that the child born to a mother who has observed the guidelines of garbhini parichaya would be endowed with excellent qualities and a spiritual bent of mind.
