Did you know… that Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is arguably the most common disorder among women, noted in around 70 % of the women facing difficulty in ovulation? In this condition, there is the development of cysts on the ovaries leading to dysfunction of the ovaries and increasing the chances of subfertility.
Common symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom are:
Research suggests that women suffering from PCOS face fertility issues due to an imbalance in hormones, glucose and insulin levels, either of which can lead towards infertility due to interference in the implantation as well as the development of the embryo. Additionally, abnormality in insulin levels can also hamper the development of the egg, as a result making the process of conception even more complicated.
According to Ayurveda, PCOS can be correlated to Aartava Kshaya, which is described as deficiency and loss of Aartava, a dhaatu that can be compared to the ovum, menstruation and menstrual fluid or blood, or delay in Aartava.
This disorder is the result of an imbalance in Pitta and Kapha doshas, along with the issue in the shukra dhatu. The predominance of Kapha doshas alongside imbalance in the dhatus and updhatus manifests as the key symptoms of PCOS such as subfertility, weight gain, and painful menstrual cycles. Likewise, the predominance of Pitta dosha manifests as hair loss, development of acne and oily skin as well as severe irregularity in the menstrual cycle. Basis pathology of the condition, it has been noted that obstruction in the pelvic cavity leading to disorder in the vatta flow, causes aggrevation of Kapha and Pitta doshas.
An effective ayurvedic treatment for PCOS usually includes herbs that reduce Kapha, enhance insulin production, normalise the hormones and metabolism and regulate the menstrual cycle.
Some common herbs used in ayurvedic treatment of POCS are as follows:
A highly recommended ayurvedic therapy for the treatment of PCOS is Uttara Vasti. This is a special therapy focussing on the detox and rejuvenation of the reproductive and urinary systems. It helps in clearing the Aartava strotas and pacified vitiated apan vayu.
