Search Icon

The stigma of the Saffron Crocus flower, saffron as a herb is excellent in relieving colic, insomnia, depression, flatulence, and baldness. It is native to various countries like Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Iran and, of course, India. It has stimulant, antispasmodic, laxative, diuretic, and aphrodisiac properties.

Saffron helps in the treatment of depression and epilepsy as it also has antidepressant properties. It influences the serotonin activity in the brain. Moreover, it supports the cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive, and nervous system and thus helps in reducing cramps and fevers along with dyspepsia, bloating, anaemia, inflammation, arthritis pain etc. It is also useful in getting rid of respiratory infections and disorders like a cough, cold, flu, and asthma.

Below are a few ways in which saffron can be consumed to benefit the most:

As a tea:

To prepare this tea, add around three strands of saffron in a cup of hot water for 20 minutes. You can add spices like cinnamon to enhance the flavour. Drink this twice daily to reduce stomach ulcers and prevent gastritis.

With ghee:

For people suffering from diabetes, consume half a teaspoon of ghee with a pinch of saffron.

With warm milk:

Mix half a teaspoon of saffron with warm milk and apply on the forehead and nose to get relief from cold and congestion. Also, consuming this concoction can help in the purification of blood and induce sleep.

With honey:

Massage gums with saffron powder mixed with honey to reduce inflammation and soreness.

With liquorice root:

Grind a tbsp of liquorice root with milk, add a pinch of saffron, and apply this paste on bald patches to cure hair loss and baldness.

Apart from this, saffron is also used to enhance colour and flavour of foods. The best way to use this herb in cooking is to soak it in warm milk or water for 10 minutes before adding it to the food.
