Here are some Ayurvedic tips on how to eat for a healthy pregnancy
-
A Sattvic Diet of freshly prepared and nutritious food should be adopted by both parents when they start trying to conceive. Include fresh fruits and vegetables
-
Ojas (immunity) building foods are important for the mother and baby. Add milk and ghee in your diet as they naturally increase ojas in the body. Flavour your milk with cardamom and turmeric as they promote digestion and are also tridoshic i.e. they balance all three doshas.
-
Rasas are the 6 Ayurvedic tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent). While they should all be eaten, greater importance should be given to the sweet, sour and salty tastes as they balance the vata. Vata is the most important dosha during pregnancy as apana vata, which governs the downward flow of energy in the body, is essential for a healthy pregnancy.
Foods to be Avoided
Avoid foods that cause gas, like hot spicy foods and uncooked leafy greens. It’s also important to avoid eating anything that has chemical additives and preservatives.
