In the past 2 years, we have seen different variants of Covid-19 and have been through different phases due to it. Its effect is not only on our physical health but our mental health too. While there is no substantial cure for it, we can certainly take preventive measures and boost our immune system from within to keep ourselves and our family members safe and protected. Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India, has a huge potential in preventive and curative healthcare. Read on this blog to know-how:
Covid pandemic has ushered in an era of renaissance in which enhancing immunity has been projected as the utmost strategy to combat the disease. Ayurveda, since times immemorial has emphasised more on body’s response and occurrence of disease occurs only if the immunity is reduced. In Ayurveda, immunity is referred to as vyadhikshamatva - the resistance of the body to fight with a disease by either way: a) Vyadhi-Bala-Virodhitvam - the resistance of the body to restrain or withstand the strength or severity or progression of the disease and b) Vyadhi-Utpada-Pratibandhakatvam - the resistance of the body to prevent the manifestation of the disease.
According to Ayurveda, a holistic approach is required to prevent oneself from COVID-19. One needs to follow complete diet and lifestyle guidelines to remain healthy and have a strong immune system. By maintaining the balance of mind, body and soul by following daily Ayurvedic practices (dincharya) for healthy living, one can keep up the immunity levels high and prevent the manifestation of the disease in the body and protect themselves from the infection.
We have mainly two types of immunity: inherent immunity - immunity that we get from our parents at the time of birth and self-immunity - the immunity that we build with our diet, lifestyle and behavioural practices as we grow. We can’t do anything about inherent immunity but self-immunity can be strengthened. However, it cannot be built overnight. Daily regimen (dincharya) including a balanced and healthy dietary intake, adequate physical activity and good sleep contributes to good immunity. Ayurveda has depicted various rules and regimens (charya), regarding diet, lifestyle and behaviour to keep the body and mind in a balanced, healthy state.
There are a lot of therapeutic cleansing/ detoxification procedures (Panchakarma) and certain immunomodulators (Rasayana, Ayurvedic remedies for Covid-19) that help build immunity naturally. Pure and natural, Ayurvedic Rasayana herbs such as Ashwagandha, Giloy, Pippali, Amla and Mulethi also contribute to good immunity when taken regularly. One can consume 2 teaspoon of Chyawanprash daily for increased strength, immunity and overall well-being as it contains 40+ immunity herbs in it. Daily practice of Yogasana, Pranayama, Breathing exercises and Meditation, as much as health permits or as prescribed by the doctor (in case of any preexisting health condition like diabetes or asthma) is necessary for mental and physical health. Diet has a very important role to play in the prevention of COVID-19 and one must take a fresh, warm, balanced diet prepared at home. Adequate sleep of 6-8 hours is a must. Nasal instillation/application of medicated oil (Jiva Anu oil or Jiva Sadbindu oil) or plain oil (Sesame or Coconut) or nasal application of cow's ghee once or twice a day, especially before going out and after coming back home is recommended.
