Search Icon

Dandruff, a condition where excessive scalp cells turn into flakes, is described as a minor roga, or ailment, in Ayurveda. This ancient science of healing states that aggravation of Vata and Pitta dosha causes dandruff. Improper hygiene and toxin build-up on the scalp could be other reasons that are triggering your flaky scalp problems.

For those of you seeking a dandruff-free life, Ayurveda recommends a holistic treatment course.

Shodhan vasti:

Shodhan or purifying vasti it is a process of cleansing and detoxifying the tissues from deep within. In case of dandruff, dashmool vasti is recommended.

Hair Massage:

Once the scalp is purified, a gentle hair massage or snehan with maha bhringraj oil (a concoction of herbs) nourishes the scalp, ridding it of dryness.

Steam Bath:

After the head massage, neem water steam bath, also called Svedan is given. This helps the oil to seep in the roots, and the neem in the water acts as a disinfectant.

Thalapothichil:

The last step of the treatment includes a vata and pitta pacifying mask made from amlas soaked in buttermilk. Once the mask is applied, cover it with banana leaves. This mask also helps stop premature ageing and hair fall.

As Vata is a drying energy, the simplest and most effective remedy for dandruff and dry hair is to moisturize the scalp internally and externally. This is why traditional medicine advocates the extensive use of oil. Following this step-by-step procedure will nourish the scalp and hair from within and pacify the aggravated Vata and Pitta.
