Ayurveda recommends that you should include all tastes (Rasas) in your diet to give your body the holistic benefits of food. We are what we eat. If your diet consists mostly of Kapha heavy foods, then over time you will gain excess weight.
Following a rasa driven diet can help pacify Kapha and assist in weight loss.
According to Ayurveda, the three tastes that balance the Kapha Dosha are pungent, bitter, and astringent.
The light, hot and rough qualities of this help pacify Kapha. It can be found in chilies, onions, radishes, garlic, ginger, cloves, cinnamon and cumin.
This cooling, rough and light taste can be found in green vegetables, turmeric and green and black teas.
These tastes leave behind a rough and dry feeling in your mouth. It is found in beans and lentils, and tart fruits like pomegranates, pears and cranberries.
Avoid the following rasas, since they aggravate Kapha and lead to weight gain - sweet, sour, and salty.
This taste brings out the worse in Kapha, creating sluggishness, heaviness, and sleepiness. Foods that have the sweet rasa are fruits, milk, ghee, yogurt, nuts, seeds, grains, and root vegetables.
Sour foods have a light, hot, and oily essence can lead to water retention and increase feeling of fatigue. Cut back on foods like citrus fruit, vinegar, green grapes, and cheese.
Any food that is excessively salty aggravates Kapha and leads to water retention. Avoid anything that is too salty, like chips and savoury snacks.
