Ritucharya 101: Beat The Summer Heat Ayurveda Style

Search Icon

During summers, the Pitta dosha in the body increases greatly. In addition to that, the hot, humid weather also lowers the body’s agni - the digestive fire. And once the heat of summer seeps into our body, it saps away our strength, leaving us dehydrated and exhausted. That’s why ancient Indian scriptures recommend following an Ayurvedic seasonal regimen to maintain our energy, health and vitality during the harsh summers.

Here’s what the ritucharya for the summers would look like:

  • Avoid cold water or beverages as it can douse the digestive fire.

  • Avoid excessive exposure to the sun as it may cause heat stroke or sunburns.

  • Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses of water every day) and other pitta pacifying drinks, like watermelon juice, cucumber juice, and coconut milk.

  • Rigorous exercises should be avoided during the summers. Try yoga instead.

  • Use sandalwood and rose perfumes for their cooling, refreshing effect.

  • Wear loose, comfortable, and light-coloured clothes to keep your body temperature cool

  • Consume light, easily digestible food as agni is naturally low during summers.

  • Avoid pungent, sour, and salty foods

  • Cut down on coffee, tea, or carbonated drinks as they can lead to dehydration.

  • Hot, spicy and acidic foods like chillies, garlic, onions and garam masala should be avoided as it can lead to vata aggravation.

  • Include ample amount of fibre in the form of fruits and vegetables in your meals.

  • Avoid going out for walks in the afternoon when the heat is at its peak.

  • A short nap during the evening is recommended to recuperate your energy

The tips mentioned above will not only keep you healthy during the summers but will also equip your mind and bodies to handle the scorching heat of the summers. You could also consider Ayurvedic therapies to cool down the body and pacify excess Pitta. To know more, dial 0129-4040404 or click on ‘Speak to a Doctor’ under the CONNECT tab in Jiva Health App.
