Shirovasti is derived from two words—shiro means “head” and vasti means “container”. Under this therapy, a small leather vessel in the shape of a cap is placed on top of the head. Why is there a need for Shirovasti?
In Ayurveda, a human body is considered to be an inverted tree which means that the head is the root and rest of the body are the branches. Just like the roots of a tree take all the nutrition to the other parts, similarly, our head is the guiding force of our body. Ayurveda also recognises the head as the ultimate organ. Hence, it is important to pay attention to the most crucial organ of our body if we wish to keep our body healthy and strong.
Method:
One can use any oil out of Mahanarayan oil, Chandanadi oil, Dhanvantara oil or Ksheerabala oil for this therapy. Ideally, 1.5 litre of warm oil is slowly poured inside the vessel placed on top of the head. Usually the therapy takes about 40-60 minutes however, it depends upon the person’s condition.
Other Benefits:
Shirvoasti is a great remedy for many problems that affect our body today specially those related to the head.
