What is Anal Fistula?

An Anal fistula is described as a small defective tube or tract. This defect is usually present between the end of the bowel and the periphery at the opening of the bottom, which is referred to as the anus. The usual reason for this abnormal condition is an area of infection of the tissue around the anus, which creates a collection of pus which is called an abscess. When this pus is disposed of, and the pus cavity has developed and drained, a tiny channel or a small opening may remain.

What are the causes of Fistula in Ano?

Abnormalities within the anorectal region and other connected organs cause a fistula in Ano.

Anal Abscess: This is the most common form of fistula in patients. It develops after the drainage and healing of the infected cavity located in the anal glands lying in the periphery of the anus and rectum.

Infections: An infection in the anal area, secondarily caused by water and germs, can result in the development of an anal fistula.

Crohn's Disease: Crohn's disease occurs when certain parts of the digested system are inflamed and have ulcerations. In some instances, such inflammation induces a fistulous opening towards the periphery.

Past Surgery: Any injury sustained by the person or surgical procedures on or around the rectum can result in sinuses or leakage from the region later.
