What is Anaemia?

The word 'anemia' actually comes from the word 'mia', i.e., blood. Anaemia means the absence of blood and refers to the reduction of haemoglobin level in the body. Normal Hemoglobin level in adult females is 12-16 g/dl, whereas in adult males, it is 14 to 18 gm/dl. When the haemoglobin level falls below the minimum parameter, anaemia ensues. ‘Ayurvedic Treatment for Anemia’ begins with identifying the root cause of every individual patient.

Types of Anemia

Anemia comes in various forms, each with its own causes. Here are some of the most common types:

  • Iron Deficiency Anemia:

  • The most common type of anemia is caused by a shortage of iron in the body. Your bone marrow needs iron to make haemoglobin.
  • Vitamin Deficiency Anemia:

  • Apart from iron, your body requires folate and vitamin B-12 to generate a normal number of red cells in your body. A diet devoid of these and other vital nutrients can lead to low production of red blood cells.
  • Aplastic Anemia:

  • This is the type of anemia that is very rare and can be fatal. It occurs when the body does not produce enough red blood cells. Its causes include infections, drug side effects, autoimmune diseases, and exposure to chemicals.
  • Hemolytic Anemias:

  • This is when the number of red body cells is lost at a greater rate than that of the production of bone marrow in compensation. Some blood disorders magnify the loss of red blood cells in lieu of their reduced synthesis.
  • Sickle Cell Anemia:

  • Sickle cell anemia is a defect that is inherited and present from birth. Such individuals have an atypical form of haemoglobin which can rupture the red blood cells into a sickle cell.
