What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, which is normally clear. The lens focuses light onto the retina, which transmits images to the brain. When a cataract develops, the lens becomes opaque, blocking the passage of light and causing blurred vision. Most cataract cases are linked with old age, but the cause could also be due to a number of other reasons including diabetes mellitus, injury to the eyes, certain drugs, especially the corticosteroids and prolonged exposure to UV light.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Cataract

The only treatment which is an effective one for the cataract is surgery. In a cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is surgically removed, and a clear artificial lens (intraocular lens or IOL) is implanted Most cataract surgeries are safe and quite effective procedures.

Ayurvedic Medication for Cataract

Ayurveda addresses cataract care through general eye health improvement, which is known as Netra Roga, and eliminating imbalances that could cause the formation of Cataract. Although Ayurveda cannot treat an existing cataract, it can slow its progression and promote eye health.

Jiva’s evidence based ayurvedic treatments for cataract may include,

  • Herbal medicines: Triphala, Amalaki (Indian gooseberry), and Bibhitaki are some of the commonly used herbs for eye health. These are believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can protect the lens from oxidative damage.

  • Netra Tarpanam: A special Ayurvedic treatment in which medicated ghee (clarified butter) is retained over the eyes. This is believed to nourish the eyes and improve vision.

  • Aschotanam: Eye drops prepared with herbal extracts.

Diet & Exercise

A healthy diet and quality lifestyle plays a crucial role in adequate eye care.

Diet: The diet should be rich in antioxidants, vitamins (especially A, C, and E), and minerals. Eat a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables especially leafy greens and whole grains. Limit processed foods, refined sugars, and saturated fats.

Exercise: Regular practice of moderate exercises can promote circulation and help the eyes overall. Eye exercises include focusing on near and far objects, etc.
