Pyorrhoea is characterized by copious discharge of pus from the roots of the teeth and gums. The pus is often swallowed along with food and is absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract causing further diseases.
From Ayurvedic perspectives, pyorrhoea reflects vitiation of rasa and raktadhatus. This vitiation is caused by impaired digestion. The toxins produced during digestion mix with these two dhatus and then accumulate in gums and oral cavity. They come out during actions like brushing teeth. So pyorrhoea is treated as a certain body energy disorder in Ayurvedic terms, caused by poor digestion.
Ayurvedic treatment consists of both internal and external medication. Digestion is restored with herbal treatments, which ensures the proper daily elimination of toxins. Cleansing herbs for the blood are administered and tooth powders recommended to eliminate pus formation and bleeding.
