Tanning is your skin's way of defending itself against UV damage. However excessive tanning may result in dullness, uneven pigmentation, dark patches, etc.
A tan appears on your arms, neck, face, and other areas when exposed to sunlight. While mild tanning fades with age, deeper tans need targeted care. Yogurt and Tomato Mixture: A combination of yogurt and tomato is effective for sun damage treatment. The lactic acid present in yogurt softens & also soothes the skin. Tomato contains antioxidants that lighten your complexion and reduce tan. Peel a tomato and mix it with yogurt. Apply this mixture to the face and leave it on for 20 minutes. Then clean it off by washing the face with water. Use this remedy consistently over a few weeks.
Lemon Juice and Honey: Lemon juice acts as a natural bleaching agent. Honey moisturises the skin deeply. Together, they lighten the tan and prevent dryness. Mix fresh lemon juice with honey & apply it to your tanned areas. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water. You should avoid going out in the sun after using lemon, as it makes the skin photosensitive.
Cucumber Extract: Cucumber is known for its cooling properties. It also soothes sunburned skin, reduces redness & helps remove tan effectively. Grate a cucumber to extract its juice, then use a cotton ball to apply the juice to your face. Let it dry naturally before rinsing it off with water. You can use this remedy daily for the best results.
Bengal Gram Flour and Turmeric: Bengal gram flour exfoliates the skin and removes dead cells. Turmeric brightens the complexion. Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric with 1 cup of gram flour. Add water or milk to make a thin paste. Apply it to your face & leave it on until it dries. Gently wash it off.
Raw Papaya and Honey Mixture: Papaya contains papain. It is an enzyme that mildly exfoliates and brightens the skin. Honey adds moisture and soothes the skin. Mash 1/2 cup of raw papaya & mix it with 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply the mixture to the tanned areas and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash it off with cold water. Use this remedy 2 times a week.
Potato Juice: Potato juice is rich in natural bleaching agents. These agents help lighten tan and dark spots. To use, grate a raw potato and extract its juice. Apply the juice directly to your face. Leave it on for 10–12 minutes. Rinse it off with water.
Orange Juice and Yoghurt: Orange juice is rich in vitamin C. It rejuvenates the skin. Mix 1 tablespoon of orange juice with 1 tablespoon of yoghurt to make a smooth paste. Apply it to your face and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse it off with cold water.
Green Tea: Green tea is rich in antioxidants that reduce tan and blemishes. Brew some green tea and let it cool. Use a cotton ball to apply the tea to your face and leave it on for 10 minutes before washing.

Lifestyle and Diet Recommendations

Your daily habits can impact your skin's health. Adopting these simple lifestyle changes can help prevent excessive sun exposure and minimise tan:
Use Sunscreen Daily: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors.
Wear Protective Clothing: Opt for wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses & long-sleeved clothes to shield your skin.
Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Try to stay indoors between 10 AM and 4 PM when UV rays are strongest.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
Cleanse and Moisturise: Wash your face regularly to remove dirt and impurities. Use a moisturiser suitable for your skin type.
Exfoliate Weekly: Use gentle scrubs to remove dead skin cells & lighten tan on the face.
