Takradhara is a Panchakarma therapy which comes under the Dhara category. Dhara is a procedure in which medicated oil is poured in a continuous stream. It is also known as Sarvangadhara.
In Takradhara, medicinal herbs processed with buttermilk are used. It is poured in a continuous stream over the forehead from a height of 4 angulas. The angula is an ancient Indian unit of measurement which is equal to the width of length of a finger, usually the thumb. It is used to measure small lengths. It is useful for treating Psoriasis, anxiety disorders, lack of sleep etc.
Takradhara is highly effective in the prevention of premature greying of hair, minimising fatigue, pacifying dosha imbalance, headache, reduced body immunity, pricking pain in palms and feet, urinary disorders, laxity (looseness/instability) of joints, cardiac disorders, reluctance, decrease appetite, disorders of head, ear and eye.
Takradhara is beneficial for people who have psoriasis, hypertension, sleeping problems, and psychosomatic disorders. It is also good for people who have premature greying of hair, headaches, pricking pain over palms and feet, heart disease, decreased appetite and disorders affecting the head, eyes and ears. It helps a person feel calm and stress free, while also improving sleep quality and concentration power. A person who undergoes this therapy can also feel lightness of body and mind.
Before the treatment is started, the patient is anointed with medicated oil according to their disease. A cloth strap is then tied across the forehead to prevent the medicated buttermilk from going into the eyes.
Before starting the procedure, the patient is asked to lie down in the supine position with the head slightly bent backwards in the droni (trough). The dhara pot is suspended in the dhara stand, which is placed at the head end of the droni.
The medicated mixture, Takra, is poured over the forehead in a controlled, continuous stream through a hole of the dhara pot. The head is simultaneously massaged with the therapist’s free pam for better effect. The maximum duration of the procedure is ninety minutes, and is done for twenty-one days.
