The origins of Ayurveda go back to the history of civilization and its earliest references can be found in the Vedas. However, despite its rich legacy, Ayurvedic science is often met with a lot of skepticism. In fact, there are those who believe it’s nothing more than a kitchen science that’s dependent on natural herbs and spices.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Ayurveda is an extremely detailed scientific system that has 8 specialized branches
General medicine that deals with a wide variety of disorders like cough, cold, asthma, fever, diarrhea, skin disorders, and arthritis.
Developed by Sushruta, the father of surgery, this branch of Ayurveda deals with surgical manipulation and looks at conditions like abscess, fistula, fractures, and dislocations.
This is the modern equivalent of what we today know as obstetrics, gynecology & pediatrics. In addition to the health of the child, it also concerns itself with the wellbeing of the mother, from before conception to even beyond delivery.
Also known as bhuta vidya, this branch of Ayurveda deals with psychiatry and neuro-psychological disorders.
This branch, also known as Shalakya Tantra, deals with disorders related to ear, nose, throat, eye, and the teeth.
As the name suggests, Visha chikitsa (also referred to as Agada Tantra) is the study of toxicology, poisons, and antidotes.
Jara Chikitsa, or Rasayana Tantra, deals with geriatric care and all things related to age-related problems and premature ageing.
This final branch of Ayurveda is related to sexual and reproductive health. It details aphrodisiacs, medicines, and methods that can be used to increase sexual potency and performance.
As you can see, Ayurvedic science is extremely comprehensive in its scope and covers all aspects related to our health and wellbeing. And if our forefathers could place their trust in it, why not us?
