The Ayurvedic Perspective
According to Ayurveda, insomnia is caused by an aggravated vata dosha. When vata gets aggravated, the prana vayu (a subdosha of vata) starts flowing excessively through the brain, causing restlessness and hyperactivity.
While you may be inclined to directly pacify the vata with a diet regime, it is important to understand that insomnia is caused when vata gets aggravated due to an unhealthy lifestyle. This lifestyle includes sleeping at improper times, eating vata aggravating foods, not exercising, drinking too much coffee and tea and taking on too much stress. So, to be free of this problem, you must fix these habits.
