Gallstones are pieces of solid material that form in the gallbladder when cholesterol hinders the proper working of the bile. These stones are primarily of two types- pigment or cholesterol and vary in size. The formation of these stones also vary from person to person. The reason behind this could be genes, weight, or your diet.

According to Ayurveda, all the three doshas play a role in the formation of gallstone. Excessive pitta facilitates the basis of stone formation. Heavy foods increases kapha and produces a sticky mixture. Vata dries this mixture and moulds it into the shape of a stone.

Here are a few herbs that can naturally reduce the chances of formation of gallstones-

  • Have a glass of Aloe vera juice daily. It is extremely hydrating, cleans the urinary system, and protects the kidney.

  • Dandelion (sinhaparnee) is historically known to help with gallbladder, liver, and bile duct problems. Ayurveda believes that bitter roots may stimulate bile production in the gallbladder.

  • Extract of artichoke (hathee chak) may aid gallbladder functioning. It helps stimulate bile and is also beneficial for the liver. Globe artichoke can be cooked and consumed directly.

  • Boil 10-12 lemon leaves in water for 5 minutes. Drink it twice a day

  • Add turmeric to a glass of water. Have it daily for 15-20 days. It helps bile stimulation and is known for its anti-inflammatory qualities.

  • Adrak (dried ginger) is known for its anti inflammatory benefits. It also helps clear toxins from the bloodstream.

Gallstones are very painful, especially if they block the bile duct. The sooner you get rid of them, the better. To know more about Gallstones, consult a Jiva doctor today. Dial 0129-4040404 or click on ‘Speak to a Doctor’ under the CONNECT tab in Jiva Health App.
