  1. Know your body type, and get on a Vata-reducing meal

And increased presence of water in your body is the precursor to pain. Every human being can be categorised in one of the three body types according to ayurveda. They are Vata-type, Pitta-type and Kapha-type. While joint pain, or any other joint ordered can happen to any one irrespective of the body type, people of a Vata body type are more likely to experience pain in their life. This can be a pain of the joints, or any other part in the body. Therefore, start by assessing what body type you belong to. Free prakriti analysis websites can help you determine your own body type.  Once you have done that, plan a Vada pacifying meal regimen for yourself. If you do not know how to do that, consult an Ayurvedic dietician to help you.

  1. No alternative to staying active

It is very common for people, especially in their advanced age, to stop all physical activity and become bed-ridden when they experience pains. This can contribute to making pains worse. Staying active helps your body release endorphins, which is necessary to counter pain.  Simple physical activities such as taking a short walk every morning and evening, taking the stairs whenever possible, or doing simple tasks at home is enough to give you your daily dose of physical activity. If you feel up to it, you can take up a simple sport such as badminton or lawn tennis with people of your equal skills. Make sure not to strain yourself too much while playing a sport.

  1. Keep your joints warm

A natural therapy for knee pain that works every time is the application of warmth. Take a little rice flour in a cotton cloth and warm it over a frying pan, after checking the heat, gently apply it on the affected area. Repeat this process for 5 to 6 times whenever you feel pain in your joints. This will give you relief from the discomfort. You can also replace rice flour with salt if you choose to. Salt has a special property of absorbing pain very effectively. Another natural treatment for relief in knee pain is to pour lukewarm water mixed with salt over the painful joints. If the pain is located in your ankles, then you can also shoot them in a tub of lukewarm salt water.

  1. An active mind experiences less pain

It is natural for your mind to focus on the pain when it stays idle. To prevent that from happening, keep your mind engaged with fruitful activities such as reading a book, or listening to music that soothes your mind. You can also start writing a diary, and keep record of your joint pain to discuss with your doctor at a later date. Since joint disorders are more common in older people beyond the age of retirement, staying active as a challenge in itself. One way to deal with that is to make a group of all the retired people you know and agree to do something for 2 hours in the morning or in the evening, which will keep your mind engaged, as well as give you enough physical activity. This will not only help you sleep better at night, but also deal with joint pains better.
