Search Icon

Observing symptoms of allergies in your child? Weak immunity cannot prevent disease-causing germs from entering the body and during season changes, immunity is naturally weakened. Immunity, according to Ayurveda, is influenced by the person’s Ojas, which is produced when the body receives best nutrition and it is disease-free. So, by enhancing Ojas, you give your child better protection against germs.

There are special times of the year when you should take special care to protect the Ojas in your child. Change of seasons make us very vulnerable to diseases, and since children and seniors are more at risk of diseases, it becomes even more important to enhance their immunity and protect their Ojas. Here are some simple tips.

Tulsi water for school:

Put 5-6 leaves of Tulsi in clean water and bring it to a boil. Let it cool and then strain the leaves out. Give your child this water to drink at school. Tulsi has anti-biotic and germicidal properties and is helpful in keeping disease causing germs under control and improves immunity. For coughs, nasal congestion and respiratory disorders Tulsi works very well. Tulsi infused water is also good for the eyes.

Massage with Til (Sesame) Oil:

Til oil is helpful in balancing Pitta dosha, which is improves digestion. It is also beneficial in increasing strength, skin health, intelligence and power of digestion. Massaging your child with til oil once a week will improve skin quality and increase flexibility in bones. Til is considered to have Balakara properties which gives strength and immunity.

Ginger Turmeric Churna:

Ginger Turmeric churna contains helpful bioactive compounds that are helpful in boosting immunity. Heat a glass of milk in a saucepan, when it starts steaming add 1 teaspoon turmeric and a pinch of dried ginger powder to it and keep stirring until it mixes well. Strain it to remove lumps of undissolved turmeric and ginger and pour it out in glass. Give your child a glass every day.

Immunity Boosting Diet:

To keep Ojas at an optimal level, Agni must be strong. Agni - the digestive fire which is the Ayurvedic equivalent of digestion and metabolism influences Ojas. Hence, choose foods that are easy to digest, light and have the intelligence of nature in it. Such foods covert into Ojas very easily. Paneer, milk, pulses, whole grains, fresh fruits are some good example of Ojas enhancing foods.

Immunity enhancing spices:

Mild spices add flavour to food and assists the digestive power of the body by breaking down the food in making the nutrients more easily available to the body. Also, these do not interfere or damage the food’s natural intelligence or nutritional properties. Ayurveda suggests adding spices like turmeric, cumin, black pepper, cinnamon and cardamom in food. Fenugreek is a common spice used in Indian cooking and can be effective in treating allergies such as sinus allergies and common cold.

Stress Busters:

Stress causes the body to respond with release of stress hormones which decreases immunity. Kids can be affected by stress too. It is an often ignored aspect in children, but some children are under stress at school or at the sportsground. To deal with that, support your child, encourage them to speak about their troubles at school or playground. Spend time doing interesting things with your kids. Practising deep breathing for 10 minutes every morning will relieve stress and enhance your child’s immunity. Read more easy tips on how to relieve stress in your child.

Exercise and good sleep:

Regular exercise promotes good health, improves digestion and flushes toxins from the body – all of which have a combined effect on strengthening immunity and Ojas. Sleep deprivation has been proven to weaken immunity. Mobile phones, TVs and computers emit a blue light which tells the brain that it isn’t the time to sleep. This messes with the natural sleep cycle, and also weakens eyesight. Remove distractions during sleep.

Ayurveda recommends special herbs that have immunity-boosting action and prevent allergies during season change. Ayurvedic medication is very effective since it is customized according to each patient.
